Get a GOOD recruiter ASAP and tell them the truth up front. They’ll work with you on the narrative.
I can come up with a response about not getting the type of work I want to be doing, etc. Is something like that the best route?
Yep, but work on affirmative phrasing focusing on the positives of the new job you’re looking for as opposed to the negatives and what you don’t like about your current situation.
Don’t say why you are looking and just say you are I interested in x type of work
Why would you advertise that you’ve basically been put on a pip? Firm hasn’t put you on one or pulled the trigger so to speak so call a recruiter and say you’re looking to move. If they ask why you can say something along the lines of not a cultural fit and that that was important to you. Just don’t know why you’d shoot yourself in the foot unnecessarily…
You can make things simple by saying you’re ready for a change. While you’ve appreciated the opportunity to spend x years at x firm, you’re ready to branch out and explore other opportunities. Then start talking about why their firm caught your attention/why you’re excited about joining their team.

I agree with all of the above, but add make sure you address any deficiencies that you have that contributed to being placed on a PIP.
Yeah I’m working on it in the meantime, ultimately so that I can start with a clean slate somewhere else. If they end up letting me stay on longer that’s fine, more time to job hunt. I think the performance stuff is at least partially just because I’m totally burned out and our culture is awful. I think a fresh start somewhere else is what I need either way.
Just providing an update for posterity. I just received an offer at a very well respected mid-size firm that should be a better lifestyle from biglaw with only a bit below biglaw pay. I’m absolutely thrilled!! Could not have asked for a better outcome.
Thank you all for the advice. Via recommendations in FB and other forums, I connected with a recruiter who was able to help me figure out what would be a good next step and had the connections to make it happen.
