I'm curious what the average salary is for an Associate Agent. I'm licensed & do everything after the sale is made as well as refer new business. I have 14 years in the industry but have been at the current company less than a year, so I know that plays a part as well. Anyone in a like-position by chance?State Farm Allstate Travelers

Typically it’s pretty secure.. I would say it depends on the department and role. With insurance being regulated and also required in most states, it’s generally secure. But then I’ve seen certain functions get outsourced, which resulted in layoffs.
I think as an industry, we all know there will always be consumers and a demand for insurance so that provides a sense of job security for the workforce in this industry. I think there may be small fluctuations and varying factors but at the end of the day, most people will be smart enough to pay for insurance, most people will get into a situation to need to use it, and we’ll have a job because we’re needed.
Some Factors
- births/deaths ratio for health/ life insurance
- new drivers for auto insurance
- changes in the workforce
— how many people are leaving the industry
— how many people are joining the industry
I think at the end of the day, if you’re good at what you do and you have the experience, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
Also, we just had the “Great Resignation” so I don’t think companies would be quick to terminate employees since they’re scrambling to hiring right now, especially anyone with proper certifications. Best of luck!
Brokerage side is seeing record profits right now. I’ve never worried about losing my job. There is plenty of work to go around here! We’re hiring like crazy right now.

I am having the same concerns. I know the industry should be pretty recession proof (at least on the carrier side), still concerned about the possibility of last one in, first to be let go scenario. When I worked for a brokerage before and through the pandemic, they had laid off people. They were a very niche broker whose clientele pretty much shut down during the pandemic, so there was less money coming in - lots of policies cancelled and clients went out of business. I was lucky enough to stay employed with them but the concern is definitely still fresh from the last few years and seeing friends struggle to find new jobs
Really depends on what you do in the industry. I was told last week that we didn’t lay off any financial lines underwriters during the 2008 recession, and my last employer didn’t either. But I think middle management, claim, operations, business development, etc are more at risk because they don’t directly generate revenue. Seems like hiring freezes are more common than layoffs so tread carefully if the new roles you’re looking at fall into these areas. Ask questions during the interview process about this (especially if it’s an insurtech)
I’ve been at my company for 11 years, it’s very recession-proof for “average” folk. But I’ve seen the upper mgmt positions be realigned and dissolved. Basically if you make over $175k, they might find a way to cut their budget.

Thank you for the insight. I’m not making anywhere close to that as a UW.
I was recently laid off from a carrier. So while stronger than others, you’re not immune.
But sales is different compared to underwriting and claims. Sales background can also help you move into different industries too. I think underwriters have to get special credentials. There’s only about a handful of UW in our office and we have over a dozen regional offices. They’re kinda hard to come by compared to the hundreds of sales associates and claims adjusters that’s in the building. UW is not immune, but they’re far better off than sales and claims.
I think at the least, sales and underwriting are safe
