If you are interviewing them ask 2 questions separately “do you require sponsorship now” and “will you at any point in the future require sponsorship”. Get a yes/no answer for each.
If they are a fit and you haven’t reached out yet, set up a screen and get these questions and the other questions out of the way before digging into job history.
They bold face still lie, my colleague had one candidate get to offer and hit up BTW....my work permit expires in 2 years.
I ask those two questions followed by just to confirm, you're a USC or you have your Green Card in hand correct?
What do you mean by "it's obvious they are on STEM OPT"?
It's important to make sure the candidate can explain their situation accurately. If you have any doubts, question them closely and determine when their STEM OPT expiration is. And at that point you can assess whether they fit into your organization's current stance on sponsorship.
