As someone who always had to share office spaces. I have a few strategies under my belt. I tell them I have deadlines to complete and then put on my headphones. I’ll also make fake timers, and be like sorry I only have 5 mins and when it goes off, I’ll go and be like sorry I gotta get this in.
They usually want your attention right away, so I would use delaying tactics like I really have to meet this deadline. I really need to get this task done and put my headphones in.
If their desk is near me where I can’t escape from them I’ll say —wow, that sounds like a lot or sounds really deep, have you spoken to an expert or a therapist about this? I just can’t relate and I might not be the best person to go to about these kinds of things. If they object…then say
But therapists are trained to help guide and navigate ppl through these kind of problems in life. Or perhaps there are other people in your support system you can go to about these things? I’m just not the best at listening or giving advice b/c I don’t know what to do or say.
