How do you efficiently collect Discovery Requests from your clients? The attorney I work for is a bit old school so they aren’t aware of how much technology can help us with this. I’ve learned clients need a lot of hand holding through this process so to me it makes since do some sort of fillable form when it comes to each item on the discovery (Answers to Interrogatories & Request for Production of Documents) so they can clearly state their response and what they’re providing….

Then I can review it, the documents and reword their responses as needed. The way we do it now is so time consuming and it’s not easy for the clients either. It’s all an unorganized mess when we get their answers and documents. I know that’s just how it’s going to be with some clients though no matter how easy you make it for them. I am helping the firm with efficiency so this is a work in progress.

Are you on Plaintiff or the Defense side? I would think for Plaintiff, you would send them a copy and go over them one by one with them. It's also helpful, for your own knowledge, to request complete certified records for all providers. By not doing that and only focusing on the accident, if you do PI, you are likely to miss stuff. I can't tell you how many good things have been found by this that Plaintiff had no idea about. Once that's complete, they should review and sign. Depending on your Defendant, it depends on how and what you ask for. We ask for everything under the sun, so we decide what's responsive.

I think the paperwork is rather intimidating to non-lawyers, clients would freak when they read some of the questions. I would go through interrogatories and mark each one that they had to answer, doctors for past ten years not related to accident, residences, divorces, work history, personal things like that, that we could not get from records we have. Would always give them a two week deadline and then follow up accordingly. Same with RTP, if you have it in your possession, marriage license, birth certificates, insurance cards, etc., fine, if not, don’t worry about it. We did allow individual authorizations to opposing counsel but only if records were released to both parties at the same time.

Well, what I do is make certain the firm has received all the documents.
2. If not, I tell the client, politely but to the point, "Look, if you do not give us the requested documents to give to OC, well, then they could ask the court to sanction you and the cost, IF the court does sanction you (make certain "you" in it) then you will be paying a hefty price as high as $5000.00 or as low as $1500.00." We have let you know the consequences. We make certain it is in writing. Since your attorneys are a bit old School (which can be good sometimes), then have it written up in the contract, where they are to initial every paragraph, every page. It's CYA all the way. We always have to hold the clients hands. It is part of the process.
I remember a client came to our office and he flat out did not want to cooperate because he was in fear (and he was arrogant about it) that his sister would get all the money (she was the original client). My attorney he was listening through the wall and emailed me and told me to inform him that it doesn't matter because if he won't hand over the documents it's fine, the statute of limitations on the case will run out in 2 weeks anyway. So, if he wanted to join in the suit then he needed to sign the contract and produce whatever documents he has.
I honestly couldn't help but laugh, it took almost everything within me to keep from bursting into laughter with the clients look on his face after I told me. That was personal injury.
Now, in family law (which is where I'm at now) is, we send the clients the documents by email (or they can come in and get the Request) but we give them a deadline to have it to us by (2 weeks before the actual deadline to OC). If they give more later, we supplement.
While waiting on the client to bring in all their documents I go ahead and do the response objections. Seriously, some of the stuff that's being asked is unnecessary. So, my favorite objection is the "fishing expedition" I LOVE IT.

Has anyone interviewed with Amazon in the last 6 months. I finished my loop for a finance role. It’s been 8 business days and no update from the recruiter. I mailed the recruiter who said apologies for the delay but we will get back to you with next steps. Has anyone had this experience and what was the outcome Amazon

Went through multi-day loop for L5 SA and felt confident in my interactions. Presentation went well with no lack of answers for follow up questions. Just found out 6 days later I will not be receiving an offer, and it is policy to not provide feedback of gaps or reasons behind no offer. Also found out they ask you not to reapply for 1 to 2 years for same role. Would anyone recommend an alternate path for feedback on interview (outside of recruiter) and is the 1-2 year policy true?

Additional Posts in Paralegals

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

So I’ve been with a court for a while and honestly the pay sucks compared to what paralegals should be making… the benefits are great though and they match my retirement 100% now that I’m vested at 3 years.I have 4 kids and 1 is getting ready for college. I feel like the benefits are great but I’d rather make more now. I am a previous LEO for 4 years who switched to paralegal so I have my leo retirement. Paralegals here make $28 with no benefits what is a good compromise

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement. They paid for my travel to their headquarters for in-person training. After interacting with my manager and some of the attorneys, I feel like I made a mistake. Manager is demeaning and rude. A bunch of the attorneys dropped not so subtle hints that people who work from home are causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know what to do.

I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I feel awful and beaten down as I don’t want to upset anyone but the new role is fully remote and a nice pay bump. Looking for words of encouragement that I did the right thing. I feel awful 😞

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice? (Also I’m only 1.5yrs old in my career so I’m definitely still new, and I have previous experience as a project assistant).

I am prior military and went to law school. I had a family to take care of while I was a student, hence I went as fast as possible to get to a paycheck, graduating in 2 years, and bypassing the standard summer clerkships. How could I get some experience strictly remote? I am w-2 working as an accountant in healthcare, have passed the bar and am working on my CPA license (studying starts at 3 am, then work FT). I would like to eventually hang a shingle as a tax lawyer, but need experience. TIA!
