I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I feel awful and beaten down as I don’t want to upset anyone but the new role is fully remote and a nice pay bump. Looking for words of encouragement that I did the right thing. I feel awful 😞

Just remember businesses will always make decisions in their best interest. You should always do the same. Loyalty isn't worth it in the work place. If they want to keep you that bad, they can ask to match the new offer and change your position to be remote. If not, their loss! Congratulations on the new role. 👏

I had the same reaction. I left and happy as ever. It will be fine! Just remember, if they had to lrt you go they wouldn't bat an eye. You have to do what is best for YOU!

like

I’m sorry that happened to you. The assistant I worked with got the same reaction from our core partner. It’s really a poor reflection on them rather than you. I agree with everything P1 said. This type of attorney will never look out for your well being at the firm, only what they can get out of it. Don’t feel beaten down, if anything be thankful you got to see the true side of the attorney and that you made the right decision to leave.

It’s just business. Good bosses will be happy that you learned enough from them to be able to advance your career. My last boss sent me cookies after I left and went in house. He was sad to see me go but excited for my next adventure and recognized that it was a good opportunity. You don’t want to work for someone who isn’t happy to see you succeed. Thank you, next! Congrats on the new role. In house life is the absolute best.

If that's the way your attorney is responding, then that's just another great reason why you should leave. That's not a professional attitude.

like

A good boss will be happy for you. They are being selfish that they will have to find someone to replace you and, they probably realize at a much higher rate!
Good job and congratulations to you!

People come and go all the time. Don’t let this loser get you down. I also worked at an international law firm for 4.5 years, and can likely appreciate some of the reasons why you left!

Stand. Your. Ground. Do not let him take away your spark! This is an exciting time for you.

If he is mad, he is probably the type that wants you never progress your career, in which case, even if you DIDNT end up liking this new job, it sounds like you dodged a bullet by getting away from him.

Also, in a weird way, take his anger as a compliment. He’s mad you’re leaving because you’re likely good at your job and he doesn’t want someone new…

Plus, I guarantee if he was offered an in-house position for more money, he would be out the door in a second. You are his assistant, and owe him nothing. Sometimes I think they forget that.

Congrats on your new job. I hear in-house is a great move!

Thank you everyone for the kind words. They are so appreciated! Hearing all your words of encouragement make me feel at peace with my decision.

You made the absolutely correct decision. I recently accepted an in-house position and super excited to start soon.

This an amazing move for your career!!!

Best decision! I hope they don’t give you a bad recommendation or reference.

If it is better all around for you, take it. Honestly,
I was kinda in the same position. I felt bad about leaving after years on the job and felt I was betraying my boss and coworkers… however you have to remember they would have your position open within a week or two and not bat an eye about it.

Final outcome for me was I was happier and it made a huge difference in all aspects of my life. Do what it best for you and what is going to make you happy. Company’s have turn overs all the time, you don’t need to feel guilty for looking out for you!

like

You made a decision that was best for you! I was recently in a similar position and received threats from my boss to ruin my professional reputation. Any good boss would be happy for you! Enjoy your new role 😊

I had a similar experience with my first firm. I thought I was close with the owner and that he would understand, but, in the end, I was given the cold shoulder by him and the rest of the admin staff - whereas, two other assistants that left before me were given big, happy send-offs. It was the best decision I ever made, because, to this day, he acts like I don't exist even though the firm I'm at now has had cases opposite him. It was very toxic and they really showed their true colors when I chose myself over them.

Don’t feel awful. You should be proud of yourself! It’s hard to find a fully remote job. Congratulations!

I’ve been fighting the pay bump battle for a year. I work for a court so we have all the red tape with pay grades etc… I started to realize a few months ago it was a loosing battle and am currently the only civil clerk for our county. So I figure when I leave they can figure it out. I’ve asked for pay bumps and supported it with why I feel I’ve earned it with working long hours, staying late, taking on extra duties etc etc… so been applying for new jobs because I can’t afford the rent in our area on what I make anymore. You do what you need to do!! You need to make it in this world. It’s not selfish… it’s business

You have to do what’s right for you!!

YOU have to do what’s best for YOU. They’ll find a replacement.

Please who knows about the advisory practice within the PwC financial crime unit (Canada Acceleration Centre)? I understand it is a client non-facing advisory role. Would it be a good career decision for someone coming from GRC firms like Kroll, Control Risk or Exiger? I am concerned about the negative reviews relating to the PwC acceleration centres in general, and getting stuck in a role which does not provide growth opportunities. Thank you.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Planning to join OFSS as I will work in product development team and can work in any shift timings with WFH.

Today I had my 2nd round interview with EY GDS and got rejected.
Do I need to worry about this and feel low?
Could EY GDS would have been better instead of OFSS?

Please provide your valuable inputs.

Have you talked about your wedding with coworkers? I made the mistake of saying I had to leave work a little early one day because I was going to do a tasting at my venue. That starts a debate on why one shouldn’t get married, how much wedding costs & what a waste it is, dresses are stupid because you only wear them once, etc. I haven’t talked about my wedding much, but I didn’t appreciate this. I ignored the negative comments and we moved the conversation along. Not talking about that anymore!
