Here’s a porosity test for you https://haircode.com/articles/how-to-do-a-hair-porosity-test.
I’d suggest going to a hairstylist and getting guidance on how to best care for your hair in its current state.
Hahah honestly curl type doesn't matter all that much unless of course, you have super coily typical black hair. In that case it's either 3c or any of the 4's. But do find out your porosity, just youtube a video on how to do it. There's a simple trick you can do with a strand of your hair and a glass of water.
Black women have Black hair period. Let’s not reinforce framing about “good hair” under the guise of saying some Black women don’t have Black hair. Hair comes in a range of patterns, textures, and porosity. Curl pattern doesn’t dictate as much for hair care as the porosity and texture of the strands, so your statement about 3c-4c using the same curl creams isn’t true at all.
Would recommend a consult and assessment with a licensed stylist who truly understand BLACK hair.

I am loc'd now, but I was blessed to have a consult years ago with a Master Stylist who went back to school to be a biochemist and did a holistic nutrition cert. The woman was OBSESSED with getting a 360 understanding of her clients to give them the healthiest hair, scalp and body.
The consult was 90 minutes, she asked about everything: diet, level of activity, allergies, prescriptions, work + home environment, commutes etc.
Fun facts I learned from her:
- Being dehydrated changes your curl pattern, reduces strand strength and reduces product absorption.
- Nutritional imbalances can cause more shedding, slower growth, color changes, increased tangling, and more.
- External humidity, temperatures etc all change your curl texture and hair health too.
Me: 😖 gahdamn, so I am screwed....
Candace: nope less will always be more when you lock in what make you, your scalp and your hair happy😉

You dont necessarily need a Candace consult, any good licensed stylist can not only identify your curl type, and porosity level, they can also do a scalp health assessment, and recommend the right type of curl product for you taking into consideration this and more:
- Strand strength and weight
- Density/volume
- Water vs Cream based products
- Protein exposure
The cost of the consult will save the cost of going through batches of products, reducing the need to toss and try over and over again😫🫣.

Good luck💜
I've only been natural for 5 months and have mastered my wash and gos to a point where people compliment it often. I did none of the research into hair type or porosity. I dont believe it matters honestly but I am type 4. Here is what I've learned works for almost everyone regardless of hair type
1. Cleanse your hair consistently with shampoo for healthy curls. Weekly is good and I don't recommend going longer than that. Almost all natural hair curl types I've seen love water.
2. Always deep condition after your wash
3. You don't need a whole lot of styling products for your curls. I like to use the doux or Uncle funkys daughter. Maybe do some research on tik tok to see what someone with a similar hair type is using to style.
