Former coworkers or managers can all be references. When I am employed and actively searching, I won’t put my current employer on either.
In the past I’ve used “references available upon request.” Most hiring managers understand sensitivity around a current employer and won’t contact those unless necessary. If so it’s at the last possible moment. If you are required to use references it’s ok to use some from previous employers. Again, on the hiring side it’s understood that folks don’t want their current employer to know they’re on the way out until it’s settled.
This is a really great idea. I typically list someone else but honestly, I like this idea better. Thank you for sharing this.
You still use references? I thought people stopped doing that in like 2005.
