I’ve found that recruiters often have a bit more leeway to be politely pushy than I would necessarily be in terms of follow up and whatnot
I've always had more luck using a recruiter. YMMV, and people here usually say "Just apply and save the firm the fee." But in my experience, recruiters help by being more able to push the application along and firms take your application more seriously because they know they'll have to pay if they hire you.
If you know someone at the firm, have them submit you. If you don’t know anyone, but there’s an alumni from your law school or some other connection, try to reach out through them first. A recruiter can be helpful as you get more senior, but early on the added fee can be an impediment. From the firm’s perspective, you cost significantly more than other candidates that didn’t use a recruiter and will need to stand out that much more.
I personally did not have any luck with a recruiter. But I’m fairly junior.
I would absolutely never use a recruiter if you are able to apply yourself. A recruiter is useful for opportunities you do not know of yourself
