I will say that when lunch is provided, you are almost expected to work for it. When you fend for yourself, you get the time to eat and have a break. I’d also opt for the latter. Good way for me to get through leftovers anyway.
Pro
Totally makes sense! A proper break is worth the $20–25 any day, I’d take the chance to actually step away from work too.
Yeah I always felt like the kind "gesture" came with a little too heavy of a price tag. Lunch is an opportunity for me to decompress and give myself a little breather before getting back to work. If I am getting fed on the job, I'm expected to keep working and I'd rather have the break for sure, even if it costs me 20-25 dollars.
Pro
I totally get that! Lunch is my reset time, so I’d rather spend a bit on a real break than feel like I’m still on the clock while eating.
We get an hour-long break every day at noon. I'm salaried working a standard 9-5, so I guess it's a paid lunch, though I've never really thought of it as such. I leave the office every day so I'm not tempted to work through it.
Pro
That sounds ideal! A hour-long break to step out and actually disconnect is priceless, especially when it's paid.

As my company covers more time zones, I have to mark my calendar as out of office for lunch, or something gets scheduled over it.
Pro
Wow, that’s intense! I can see why you have to block your lunch, otherwise it’d just disappear into back-to-back meetings.
Pro
Unpaid technically, however, we we are results based. So we only work the hours we need to for the work to get done. Some weeks it may only be 25 hours, next week may be a full 37.5. However, at my previous job, when it was more strict, I much preferred the unpaid full hour to actually enjoy a break and not feel guilty about it, or like you say, having all eyes on you time clocking!
Pro
I completely get that. I’ve definitely been in situations where I felt guilty taking a full lunch or worried about people watching the clock, and it really takes the joy out of the break. Even if it’s unpaid, having that time to actually step away and breathe makes such a difference for me.

I’m salary, so as long as my work is done when I take lunch or for however long doesn’t really matter to my job. There’s a huge culture of flexibility here which I really enjoy
