The duty sign up opens at a specific time. It’s a mad dash to sign up for the year, ala Hunger Games. It’s pretty entertaining.
It varies depending on what you like to do. I prefer morning duty but I know a lot of people prefer afternoon duty. Thankfully we only have duty 1x a week and recess duty 1x a week.
We only have morning and lunch duty. Our AP decides who goes where. Morning duty is covered by teachers who are off 1st block (we are a 4x4 school) and stipend coaches regardless if they are off 1st or not. Lunch duty is covered by everyone. You only have to cover it once a week though.

Ok, help me out. What does 4×4 mean?
Duties are assigned beginning of the year. Every day morning and afternoon hallway or bus duty. Recess duty every day. Lunch duty every day. We get a bathroom break during the 20 minutes during lunch while supervising lunch duty.
There’s a shared spreadsheet of duties. When it opens, there is a great and terrible war for the most desirable duties. The average teacher signs up for five weeks of some kind of duty. Coaches and other extracurricular activities people are only required to sign up for four weeks of duty.

I have had arrival carline duty ALL year long...
Our school assigns them. I was stuck with monitoring an area far from my room that I hated. I asked if I could trade and it made it so much better. Sometimes it's the little things that make the difference.
We are assigned lunch recess duty. 2x a week, non-consecutive days.
Hallway duty? Sign-up sheet at the start of the week. You pick a 15-minute slot that works for you, catch up with some students, maybe avoid that creepy math teacher everyone dodges. Easy peasy.
We get assigned duties. I have 3 a day. Every day. All year long. 😒 Oh, and basically the admin leaves it the same way every year, so I'm sure I will have the same 3 duties next year. 🫤
