I am in a state that pays max 26 weeks of unemployment, with an absolute max of $500 a week. When I was laid off off at the end of 2022 with all the layoffs, it took me 10 months to find another job. So I had to live off of that plus my savings (with a mortgage, family, it just wasn't enough). I donated plasma (until I couldn't seem to get my blood protein levels back high enough) for extra funds, and I shopped for groceries at Aldi (lots of lentils, rice, beans for protein), used all the couponing apps (Rakuten, Fetch), waited for all the holiday sales to buy the things I needed at a discount, bought in bulk, went to stores that sell recently expired packaged goods at a steep discount (like protein bars), was super careful with running the AC and using electricity to keep that bill down. Go with a cheaper mobile phone plan if you're not tied to your provider (you can get a cheap new phone and set minutes and Gigs of data via deals at HSN which my mom does annually, or other such plans if you go prepaid with the big carriers or even Ryan Reynolds' carrier). If you have a vehicle, you can see about doing deliveries or Uber to keep you afloat.
This is honestly such good advice! All of it.
What’s helped me is tracking every expense (even the small stuff) and cutting back on anything non-essential, like subscriptions or takeout. I also started looking for side gigs... things like freelance work, tutoring, or even gig apps to bring in a little extra cash without a big commitment. Meal prepping and shopping with a strict list has saved me a lot, too. Mostly, I try to stay positive and remind myself that this is temporary
