This week’s topic in our staff meetings is trauma and understanding the behavior of our students. Anyone else can’t help but take it personal when students lash out? 🙋🏻‍♀️

I’ve been there, but I think it’s important to remember that behavior is communication. Try to discover what triggered the behavior and what the student is trying to achieve with their behavior. It’s hard not to take it personal, but in my experience it typically isn’t.

I think the ones who need the help are the ones internalizing it. You can see they need help but you can not seem to get through to them. The loud ones to me are ok. You can hear them and talk to them.

helpful

what about understanding the trauma of teachers caused by the behavior of their admin? this ongoing trauma impacts our productivity and mental processing speed.

uplifting

When referring to trauma, there might not be a known trigger or provocation to an outburst. Many students who internalize also externalize. Provide a safe space but building a relationship is going to go a very long way and really is the key.

I understand this might sound a little snobby but I'm not trying for it to come off that way. I've been around impressive people throughout my adult life. I judge the company I work every time they misspell my name even though I’ve corrected it over and over again. It tells me they don’t care and don’t want to make the effort. It’s in my email, my email signature, on my profile, etc. How hard is it to look it up and spell it correctly?!

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

I’m not from an English speaking country but I am watching a tv show and businessmen walk into a room and instead of greeting eachother, everyone says each person’s first name in lieu of hi, however in my experience working in the states, I haven’t seen anyone do this, it’s always hi or good afternoon or some other greeting first THEN they say their first name. is it also appropriate to omit the greeting?

There are many reasons why people in the working world are not direct when speaking. They are one of the following:

* They pretend they are experts
* They are inexperienced
* They are full of themselves
* They don't know what they are looking for
* They love to talk

Even if these people have good intentions, be careful of them. Your time is valuable, and the best thing for you to do is to be direct back at them.
