I have a structured resume and the gap looks obvious so I put the years and “time away to raise family” and a list of volunteer/ other skills developed (pta treasurer with 15m budget, certified soccer coach, etc). Put something interesting there and it is a conversation starter
Thank you for the feedback!
As a hiring manager, do not try to fake corporate skills out of this experience. Just put simply - taking time away for family needs. That way no one has to wonder if you were fired, couldn’t find a job, or chose not to work.
People will know that you have retained the soft skills you had before the break, but your technical expertise is probably rusty. I would try to brush up on the knowledge before the interviews. You may have to start a level or two below where you were before depending on your profession.
Thanks for your input!
I just ust gave birth to my second child but never took a long amount of time away from work. But I would suggest try translating your life experience into leadership strengths without saying you were “stay-at-home parent” as a job. For example, the past 9yrs I'm sure you have performed/ been responsible for the following:
stakeholder management, conflict resolution, scheduling, advocacy, crisis management...
Just say the truth. Nothing shameful and be proud of it
