Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.

From a culture standpoint I prefer private firms. Public firms are beholden to shareholders and have to watch the margins. Private firms have the luxury of focusing on long-term growth and benefits. (Unless they are PE backed then disregard everything I just said and run like hell)
Personally, I’d run like hell. First, the PE point made in the first comment is valid (unless you’re a very senior role then it can be something you get rich doing) and they were bought by a PE consortium so it’s multiple funds hounding you.
Second, I think their business is a joke. Their two prime products, retail sales reports and tv viewership ratings, and both going down in value.
Their retail stuff has always been a made up joke, but with the consolidation in the grocery industry all they need to do is lose a couple retailers and their products aren’t worth much of anything.
