Organizations with mentoring:
100 Roses from Concrete
Marcus Graham Project
Adcolor
MAIP
Yes, I know. I’ve participated in the bottom three. Pretty sure the mentorship comes if you were a part of their development programs in the past. So, you had to be a former MAIP intern, or MGP participant.
For AdColor, depending on where OP is in their career, there might still be an opportunity to apply to their futures program.
Try reaching out to some senior Black creatives on LinkedIn. (Maybe ones that went to your school?) See if they have 20 minutes to spare to chat about the industry, and navigating it as a Black creative. Be clear that you’re not looking for a job. Just guidance. I have a feeling you’d be surprised by the openness to chat.
That said, why do you think your writing mentor needs to be Black?
thank you all for these recs! i think i want my writing mentor to be Black because the environment i’m in, i can’t tell if my writing needs work or if it’s just white men only seeing the white male perspective.
and i think i need to be mentored by someone that can help me write through that because it feels very prevalent in my experience.
OP: Are you seeking career guidance as a Black creative? Or a writing coach? Or both?
DM me - I can connect you to an industry vet who had to deal with this on a daily.
