I think applicants can and should ask about salary. The only time when a company is dodgy about salary is when they are intentionally planning on underpaying people. It's amazing how embarrassed people get about asking about the finances when that's literally why we are working in the first place.

I agree. I find it telling when salary questions are treated as awkward. Work is an exchange, not a favour. When candidates feel safe asking about pay, it usually signals a healthier and more transparent organisation.
I can't think of one off the top of my head. The flexibility thing unfortunately does make a lot of sense. There were numerous stories that came out the past few years that painted asking about WLB in a negative light, saying it was a red flag. I'm not surprised candidates are apologetic to ask about it, if they ask at all.

I have seen the same narrative and it has done real damage. Asking about balance should not be framed as lack of ambition. To me, it shows self awareness and sustainability, not disengagement.
