I'm a Manager (haven't changed fb). This what I wish someone would have told me.
1. Focus on learning and developing skill, the money will naturally follow. You're better off making less with a talented people and you'll be less stressed when you have guidance.
2. People in our profession are people pleasers and you do have to say yes a lot your first couple of years but then you can start saying no.
3. You don't have to volunteer for everything. Helping with all the charity work is great but it doesn't play much into promotions.
4. Let go of being perfect. We all make mistakes in this profession because its so complicated. We do the best we can but don't get discouraged if things go sideways now and then.
5. Build a network of peers. The people I started with now work all over the US. They have my back with questions and if I'm ever in need of work, they have pull at their firms.
6. Don't try to be the best or too competitive. Honestly, this should be number one. This is the trap of a bunch of type A personalities working together. Then we burn eachother out. Just focus on learning and staying in your lane. Always be supportive of others so they help you too.
7. Don't sacrifice your health. Do the morning workout.
I started my career about 3 years ago and I wish someone would have told me the above. Here are a few things I’ve learned.
1. PTO is part of your compensation, set reasonable boundaries based on your role.
2. People pleasing superiors will ask for your opinion, but that doesn’t necessarily change their expectation on the topic. My strategy has been fyi- blah blah blah and they say ok, but still want it done. My response: ok, as long as you know. Obviously not so casually stated but it’s worked out well for me.
3. Even if you make new friends, be careful what you say or who you trust. Sadly I have a snake on my team who taught me this. Thankfully, the quality of my work spoke for itself and it bounced back at her.
Good luck! 🍀
