I wish we knew a bit more about what's going on with students. It would help teachers understand down behaviors. We have a family of three kiddos. Two of them are off the chain-belligerent, hateful, and defiant, and the other one sits at her desk, with her head down, and cries at the drop of a hat. I found out that their family is going through a very rough time right now.
It took me a while to accept the whole “behavior is a function of need; behavior is communication” thing as old school teacher. However, I have come around to understand that this is the truth. I work with many children who struggle with emotional management and behavior. I have one in particular this year who’s struggles really hard. I do my best to be calm, supportive, and understanding for this little one. He really needs love and patience and opportunities to build his confidence.
