I just found out I have to hire for a role that overlaps my salary and potentially could end up making more than me (very small margin). This is really upsetting to me and I am just not sure how to handle this. I have discussed feeling massively underpaid for the value I deliver to our team already with my supervisor but now it's being very blatantly shoved in my face. Has anyone else made the same salary as someone they are managing or had to navigate this conversation? TIA!

This is very common. Unfortunately, in most cases you have to move around internally (promotion) or leave the company to get better compensation. Sometimes people also present resignation letters to get counter offers but it’s risky if you’re not serious about leaving your current employer.

I have been in this situation where they did a salary adjustment and adjusted my staff's salary higher than my own. I was pissed, but guess what? It was just a complete oversight on their part. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY. It's time to bring this to your manager, not in terms of fairness, but in terms of the value you bring. Gather all of your accomplishments and how your work has directly improved organizational outcomes. Write a letter stating your requested salary adjustment and use your knowledge of the hiring range for a lower level position as a basis for your request, combined with the list of accomplishments/results you put together. Request a meeting specific for this topic- don't try to add it into a normal check-in. When you state the number you want, say it with confidence and then stop talking. Let the silence hang. Watch your body language and sit up tall with a neutral face and head high. Let them be the first to respond.

YUP I had a similar situation. It sucks. I would definitely speak up and mention it to whoever you report to - if they know that you have access to the new roles comp range. My only advice is make sure you’re talking to someone you trust.

Every move should be strategic. Totally okay (temporarily) making less if you are building skills vital to your career advancement.

Ask yourself three questions, if the answer isn't yes to all, then get a mentor and strategize your departure ASAP!

Questions:
1. Are you adding value?
2. Are you being valued?
3. Are you growing in value?

While I haven’t encountered this problem recently it was something I dealt with in the past. And is usually based in the fact that people starting out don’t really know the worth of their job and companies take advantage of it.

Add to that the general gender biases around value and pay and it creates sticky situations like this. I’d say look for other offers with your skill set and seniority - come to the table with an offer on hand that is a rate you find reasonable and make them counter it

You will have to be ready to take the other offer, but at least in my case I’d rather start somewhere new that recognizes my value than stay somewhere that doesn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

I also have been in the same exact position. I’m a manager of analytics and have also expressed my pay gap. I’ve made it a point to be more vocal about it but it still hasn’t gotten me anywhere. 3rd year in my role and still only a .88 CR despite positive PE’s. However, at one point they also wouldn’t let me hire someone I really wanted to hire internally because they would make more than me. But then months later, they moved heaven and earth to negotiate with an external on my team who ended up making just 3k under what I made.
