Hello!
I finished my final round(s) for a TAM position at Google (GCP) last week and was told by my recruiter that my feedback was great and that I made a solid impression on the team and am "firmly in the running". I was supposed to hear back this week (according to the recruiter) but he just told me that it's still in the process and that I'll have to wait for another week or so.
Is this common at Google ? I have heard they are notorious for being really slow with their hiring process.

Yes, they can legally so long as you're not under contract
Usually companies don't mess with salaries because people get upset and quit.
I wouldn't work for someone who would do that
I've never been "quiet fired"
I was fired once, but the people who did it were quite loud about it.
Quiet fired = they make your employment sufficiently sucky that you leave on your own because you don't want to work there anymore.
It likely depends on your state, but yeah I’ve seen that before around 2008. We where told rather than layoffs they where reducing pay.
Your only options are probably either deal with it, or find a new job and leave.
Yeah, I am starting to see that I don't have a lot of options here, I am thinking I'll stick with it for a bit while job hunting.
Might be legal, but it is a PHENOMENAL way to destroy people’s motivation (and I say this as someone who’s not all that motivated by money). Best option is probably dialing back your care-o-meter at work, and start looking elsewhere.
Honestly, those are my thoughts exactly! I'm taking on the whole act your wage mindset while I start my job search!
Happened to my brother twice during pandemic.
No, first company back in summer of 2020 and it just happened again about 2 months ago at a different company.
During the Great Recession, a lot of companies cut salaries across the board so that they could minimize layoffs. I don’t think you can choose not to get a salary cut. They might offer folks a choice of the salary cut or getting laid off. When there is economic uncertainty, it’s a tough choice.
Hmm, yeah, I am starting to think that my company is trying to get people to quit on their own so they can avoid paying unemployment but maybe I am over thinking it
Depends on the country, in Europe is illegal, what they can do is cut your hours or days to reduce the expenses
I worked for a company that did 10% paycuts in 2020 to avoid layoffs. They ended up doing lay offs after a few months anyway. Eventually gave the 10% back to the employees that were left. It's terrible, but if they don't do it they are likely to have to cut manpower, and still may have to do so after the paycuts
They can, and you should start looking
Fair Labor Standards Act is covered by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission & the Department Of Labor. Talk to the local one in your state & ask them how to prove a case. Start making copies of all communication.
Unionize the workers under the National Labor Relations Act. A unit of the union can be based on skill. You need the majority of the unit to get the union certified. The National Labor Relations Board should be able to help with explaining what you need to do. They also have an option to do a "walkout" under "consorted activities" which is what happen with the UN-certified (& illegally segregated by protected classes) unions at Google & Netflix. Unions can bargain & strike for any working condition including pay. Companies are scared to fire people for union activities. Bargaining does not mean you will get the pay, but you may get reduced hours or days off to work elsewhere. You can also try bargaining without the union, first.
