I’m so sorry to hear this. I would suggest bringing flowers if they’re allowed (sometimes depending on the illness they’re not) and just saying “I’m here for you” and being there is enough. She will likely be receiving palliative care to manage pain, so she may actually be her usual self but a bit more tired. Act normal, treat her normally, give a little work gossip and promise to return to visit and do so on a regular cadence until the family says otherwise. I wouldn’t bring food because if it’s what I’m thinking she won’t have an appetite, but if it’s hospice at home you can pick up something for the family to eat like lasagna that keeps well, or if not you can bring a simple card with a gift card to their favorite restaurant. Lord knows they don’t have time to cook.
