I keep seeing friends level up fast when they switch companies, but I’m leveling up my work inside my company with no title change or compensation to match. I’m doing more. I’m better at what I do. Yet the growth feels stuck.

Is it actually harder to grow inside a company than to jump to a new one? What has your experience been?

Jumping is apart of the game in our industry. But the cost of that pay bump and title is figuring out a whole new team with whole new processes.

So it's important to cost benefit analyze for yourself. Sometimes I'm okay making less because my current situation has its pros. If progress is your primary objective- jumping is almost always the only way.

Yes, almost always. This is why jobhopping has become the norm in the past 5-10 years. Companies don't value loyalty the way they once did. The biggest salary bump I've got internally was 10%, and that was a one-off. I've gotten 25% by changing jobs.

It can be easier to move up in a new location. One reason is that you can get pigeonholed in your current organization, and management only regards you as someone doing what you're already doing. It can be better to be the new guy who arrived with few preconceptions.

Sadly, I’ve found job hopping to be the only meaningful way to increase title and salary - if that is your ultimate goal to have higher pay.

Jumping will always be the fastest move up in salary and position. Just make sure it’s the right move up. Every job I took solely based on money were the worst moves I ever made.

I worked a company that only gave a 1-3% increase annually to help with cost of living ($15-60 increase each paycheck doesn't exactly help with cost of living in SoCal) and these increases only came after year 5. Even being there a decade, my salary didn't increase much even though the workload did. Oh and they offered no benefits. Only time I saw a bigger jump was when I'd leave for 6 months and do something else then come back, but even then, it was maybe 5-10% more than the previous time. I had multiple "promotions" but no salary increase to go with it, so really it was just, "Here! Do the job of 3 other people as well now because we don't want to pay someone to do it."

It depends on the person. For most I would say yes - but if you cross the right paths & network with the right people, you can level up just as fast. It might just be a slower roll at first.

I'm the hiring mgr for designers in my org. I recently discovered pay band information given to me by the HR generalist I'm working with on hiring was outdated and updated bands had been released over the summer (prior to my hire date). The outdated information had led me to believe a prime candidate was out of range. Aside from incompetence, can anyone think of a reason why HR might have withheld information about the pay bands? I assume mgrs see the full monty when it comes to pay...right?

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)
