I'd bet she's apologizing because she's been burned before, sad as that is. People don't typically grovel for no reason. That kneejerk instinct is likely the result of working in some really toxic environments.

I agree. That kind of apologising usually comes from being punished before for being unwell.
I can understand it might be a reaction to a previously toxic situation. However, that is definitely just how some people are, too. It’s how I was when I was younger. At this point, I won’t apologize for something outside of my control.

Safety and consistency from managers make a huge difference in breaking that habit.
Express gratitude for their health restoration process. Emphasize the importance of self care being most important. Tell them that you would not want their return to be premature because you don’t want any future set backs. If possible ask if they want to work from home.

Framing return to work as part of healing, not a favour, helps remove guilt and sets a healthier tone.

Yeah I agree with the comments above, and possibly aswell just feel really guilty not coming in and doing their job (even though of course it’s completely out of her control feeling unwell) as I feel like that if I need to call in sick, that I’m letting the team down, but they’d rather you come in feeling good.
