I think it all depends on the content. You're right that it should be sparse. People tend to skim and scan. So what probably matters, in all honestly, is how impressive the names are. If you've worked for major agencies and had household name clients, that will get you noticed. No need to explain how you did it on the resume, that's what interviews are for. And if you want to show some personality or wit, that's what the cover letter is for.
