I was fired from a public accounting firm two years ago and recently from another one. I worked hard and did my best, but I feel public accounting may not be the right fit for me.
I want to move to industry/private accounting for better hours and work-life balance. I have an active CPA license but only public accounting experience.
Is it possible to switch without industry experience? Should I apply for Senior or Staff Accountant roles? Are industry hours and pay generally better?

If you don’t think public accounting is a good fit then yes. However, it might just do your bosses. What size firm are you at. Top 10 or top 500?

My first accounting job was at a top 10 firm, but I was laid off from there. My second role was at a small firm, where they said the reason for my departure was performance-related. I’m now trying to move into industry, but I haven’t been getting any interviews so far.

Industry roles will depend on what your PA experience encompassed. Did you do A&A, Tax, both? How many years? That matters for which level of industry role you would be a fit for and should focus on for your search.

At lower experience levels some industry roles may be comparable in pay but likely will be lower although with better hours.

I have three years of tax experience but no experience in industry roles. I am trying to transition into industry, but I am not getting any interviews so far.

What feedback did you get from the two firms?

I started at a top 10 accounting firm, where I was laid off. My second role at a small firm ended with performance being cited as the reason. I have three years of tax experience, no industry experience, and I’m trying to transition into industry but haven’t been getting interviews.

I have many options to consider but two options below are what I’m thinking of right now.

I want to see your thoughts on which one I should pick.

Job A: Project Engineer. 135K/yr base. 10% signing bonus.

Job B: Senior Project Manager. Contract. $60/hr standard. $90/hr overtime.
