I was informed my severance is standardized and non-negotiable. Has anyone pushed back on that before and gotten a different outcome?

Some companies will have the severance plans set to a standard which may be included in the employee handbook. They won't negotiate severance conditions on an individual basis as it would get too complicated, lead to charges of unfairness, and so on. You can try to push back against it, but if that's what they told you they probably won't budge.

That makes sense from a policy and fairness standpoint. I’m wondering though . in your experience, does “standardized” ever leave room for exceptions based on level or tenure, or is it typically firm across the board?

I have a friend who pushed back and got more. I've never done it personally, but she was somehow able to get them to give her more money.

That’s interesting to hear. Do you know what specifically helped your friend get a different outcome , was it how she positioned the request, her track record, or something else? I’m curious what tends to move the needle in these situations.

It really depends on a lot of circumstances, especially if you're working in a niche industry in a niche role and you spent five plus years with the same organization. I've had a friend who managed to get something more than what was offered which was already higher than the standard, but she had to go through the legal route.

You’re spot on tenure and being "hard to replace" are the biggest cards you can play. Once you hit that 5-year mark, you’re not just a headcount; you’re institutional knowledge. The legal route definitely gets results, though it’s definitely a "bridge-burning" move.
For the friend who brought in a lawyer, was the final increase based on a specific legal claim (like age or tenure), or did the company just pay out to avoid the headache of discovery?

I always say push back and ask for more no matter what the outcome. You won’t know until you try. I would also bring up the health care costs post severance period to see if you could negotiate another couple of months to help cover that.

I pushed back and received more as they tried to say this what is given what the neglected to realize is I had issue the last several severance packages- they reached out to attorney and I received what those I had issued received 😊

Probably the antithesis of this bowl - but need some advice. This is for a house in a Southern metro. Built in 1960s completely remodeled in 2000s with some very recent additional remodeling of kitchen and bathrooms. Well kept house. The price will be nearly $1M, the same as something built in 2010+ with similar square footage (because a lot of the price is the lot, its a super expensive zip). Should I steer clear because of the age? Will it cost a ton in maintenance and utility bills?

Have money invested in S&P 500, and now starting to regret not having diversified to international stocks as well. Would want to diversify now to buy a total stock market index, however since S&P 500 dropped more than that index, not sure it’s worth to crystallize losses to do that. The alternative is to stop buying S&P 500 and start buying other markets as separate ETFs, to eventually bring in line approx. with total stock market index. Any advice on the best course of action?

Hi Team,

Can we delay the interview by a few weeks? I am not at all prepared and I don't want to miss the opportunity..

I am a Senior Manager of Software Engineering and lead architect at a small company (was a startup with < 10 employees when I joined, now has > 50). I am the most senior technical person in the company (we don't have a CTO, I report to the COO), even though I only have 4.5 YOE. By God's grace I have been able to succeed in the role, but feel that I am underpaid and would like your input.
