I’d love to get your thoughts on lunchtime meetings. Do you think noon should generally be avoided out of respect for people’s breaks, or is it acceptable as long as everyone is available? And if a meeting is scheduled during lunch, should providing food be expected? At my previous company, lunch was always provided for noon meetings, but that hasn’t been the case at my current one. Curious how it's handled elsewhere.

I am a big fan of meetings with food! I generally try to avoid scheduling anything between like 11:30-1:30 just to give people the chance for their lunch break, but if we have to do it during that time period, then I absolutely will get food ordered for the team, so everyone is able to participate and be fed at the same time.

That sounds like a great approach! Respecting lunch hours while making sure people feel taken care of when it can’t be avoided. Food definitely helps. You are a great leader!

I think unless you're doing a lunch and learn, meetings should 100% be avoided at noon. Everyone needs a break from work and it's not fair to not give employees that. Again, if you are doing a meeting over lunch, it should be paid and provided.

Totally agree! Lunch should be a protected time. If it's being used for meetings, providing lunch is the least that can be done.

No lunch meetings unless the only alternative is 4pm or later

Agreed. I'd rather choose lunch time meeting to a after 4pm one!

Should be acceptable as long as everyone is available. Depending on the company, all attendees may not be on the same timezone. I personally prefer taking lunch at 1pm or later so I don’t mind noon meetings.

That’s a good point! Flexibility matters, especially with different time zones. Noon meetings can work as long as everyone’s aligned and comfortable with it.

I think it's best to avoid that time of day for meetings. A lot of people will schedule appointments during their lunch hour, or they may have lunch meetings outside the office. As a general rule a two-hour window starting at noon should be free from meetings.

That makes a lot of sense. Lunch hours are often the only flexible time people have in their day. Blocking off that window is a good practice.

My team is national, so we span multiple time zones and it’s difficult to schedule a meeting that’s NOT during someone’s lunchtime. It’s an unfortunate situation, but we’re always allowed to still take our lunch before or after any meetings.

Totally get that! It's a tough balance with a national team with different time zones!
