Lots of time outside. Hands-on, project based learning. Kids pursuing interests, rather than solving for the lowest common denominator
I would want to make it as diverse as possible. All different kinds of kids from all different walks of life. Black, white, rich, poor, US-born and immigrants, gay, straight, all different religions/beliefs. That probably sounds so cheesy but I absolutely believe that would be the ideal way for kids to learn and to be prepared for the real world. So many people try to keep their kids in a bubble and want to "protect" them by putting them in schools that cater to their specific ideals or beliefs, and I always think that's such a shame, because once they grow up, these kids will be working and dealing with all different types of people, and unfortunately, by the time they're adults, they have ingrained prejudices because they grew up going to school surrounded only by like-minded people.
I'm Christian, and many of my friends from church home school their kids or send them to private Christian school, because they are so terrified of our "evil culture" influencing their children. I get it to some extent, but that "evil culture" (I don't think the everything is a horrible and evil as many of these other parents do, personally) is all around them, and they are going to have to learn to deal with it and navigate it. I think parents like that are doing their kids more harm than they realize.
This is so interesting...I'm black, from an immigrant background and the ethnicity aspect didn't even occur to me, perhaps because the idea of curating a world with just people who look like me (or don't) is hardly ever an option. So much so that it didn't make the list!
Getting kids intrinsically motivated to learn via play and curiosity and experiences vs forcing a barrage of facts. If they’re intrinsically motivated to learn the rest will take care of itself
I’d love to know your situation if time and money aren’t an issue…
Lots of mental health support and all teachers/staff would be proficient in trauma informed practices and neuroscience.
The act of ‘Learning’ physically changes your brain through neuroplasticity. Every new experience, fact, or skill reorganizes neural pathways, strengthening used connections and pruning unused ones. By understanding how memory, emotion, and active engagement interact, a teacher can optimize study habits and retention.
