I mean I want a hard working employee, but I also want somebody who has a good balance between their home and work life. The better balance they have in life the more productive they will be as employees. So I think I would go for the 2nd option, but I would make sure they were also passionate about work.

That's a great point

Work to live - balance is essential. I don't believe there is a good work/life balance with those that live to work. Those are the ones that are going to burn out or become disgruntled. Balance is critical.

When I hire people, I look for people with passions outside of work. They tend to have the most balance and don't take things so personally.

You might think the "live to work" employee would be the best -- the go-getter, gungho, nose to the grindstone type. Those dry out and burn up quickly. The live-to-work employee has a healthier perspective. He understands the importance of his job and that the job is not the only thing that is important. If you have a project that needs to be done in 6 months, go ahead and put together a team of L2W types. It's like buying a mercenary army for a frontal assault on the enemy fortifications. After the mission is over, you don't have to worry about paying them anymore because they'll be gone.

Work to live. They value their personal time and prioritize a healthy work life balance. They're reliable, efficient, and often bring fresh perspectives to the table. They might not always jump at every overtime opportunity or dedicate their weekends to solving complex equations, but neither would I so yeah.

If a partner asked you to do non-client related/may help later work, how long is too long to get back to them? Came to big law as a second year from a smaller firm (three years out). First year (who should be a second year) is emailing me trying to figure out where are things with a federal notice summary (I allowed them to help). Can I tell the first year to chill? I feel like if the partner needed it ASAP, they would have said so. I turned in the summary less than 72hrs later. Nbd/big deal?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
