I’m a junior transactional associate and I’m anticipating being laid off from my law firm due to low billable hours, despite extensive efforts to secure work (sending hundreds of emails soliciting work, traveling to other offices, etc.). I’m concerned the firm will try to characterize the layoff as performance-based when the real issue is industry-wide transactional slowdowns. Also, my firm is known for offering below-market severance packages and website time. How do I handle?

Leaving my (London, big US) firm; HR has sent me various confirmations they are asking me to sign “before my last day”: I haven’t taken any docs, am aware of my regulatory obligations, don’t have any claims against the firm, have returned everything I need to return etc etc etc. This feels like an obvious try-on: the firm isn’t paying me anything to sign, my reg obligations are unaffected by it etc. How do others manage these? Just walk out on last day?
