I'm at a career crossroads in marketing and facing a crucial decision: should I specialize in a niche like SEO or PPC, or continue to broaden my skills across multiple disciplines? Some colleagues argue that becoming a specialist can make you indispensable and lead to higher pay, while others suggest that a jack-of-all-trades is more adaptable and can pivot easier. I'm torn about which path might lead to greater career success. What has been your experience? Has specializing or diversifying brought you more success in your marketing career?

FAANG and big enterprises (the companies that pay the best) want specialists. Want someone who absolutely owns something (CRM, MAP, SEO, analytics and reporting, etc). Broadening your skill set early on is great but eventually find something that makes you stick out (and the more software or tech expertise it requires the more lucrative).

Their post mentions higher pay - these are the companies that pay the most. I make more than most small company CMOs and I’m a mid level IC. Being at a start up when you’re younger and doing a lot of things (while broadening your skill base and figuring out what you want to focus on) is fantastic, but if you want to eventually make the most possible money in marketing picking a specific tech or software-based niche and doing that for a big enterprise is what is going to get you paid the most.

I think it has something to do with what kind of organization you want to work for and where you might be located (or want to be located). Early on you should learn all you can about various disciplines. If you want to work for smaller organizations that might be the best profile to present. But if you want to move on to large organizations, being specialized will be to your benefit.

Good answer- you want to be a ‘T-Shaped’ marketer, get broad experience early to get a working knowledge across marketing and then go deep in 1-2 areas :)

Both paths have their perks! Specializing makes you a go-to expert, often leading to higher pay and job security. But being a generalist gives you more flexibility and makes it easier to pivot into leadership roles.

It really comes down to what excites you—do you love mastering one thing or connecting the dots across different areas? Some start as specialists and broaden out later. No wrong answer, just depends on your goals!
