There are times when it's just necessary to tune out the negativity. I've worked with people who never stopped complaining, and it really can have an affect on your own attitude. Unless you make a conscious effort to push it aside, their doom and gloom can make your own outlook grow pretty dark. I remind myself that while I could gripe about things at my job, no job is perfect, and maintaining a reasonably good attitude is just part of professionalism.

Honestly yeah, sometimes it can be draining and makes you feel like utter crap!
Headphones and a closed door. Not revolutionary, but it works. I can't fix the culture and I'm not going to try to be the office cheerleader. I just minimize my exposure to the people who drain me and save my energy for the work itself.

Great insight from those who commented above me. I’m going through this as well and a colleague just said to me the other day “Feed the hawks, starve the turkeys”. You’re going to spiral if you try to influence and/or convert those who truly don’t care to be anything but negative. At some point, there has to be separation for your own sanity. Pour your efforts into your own work and those who bring their best selves to work each day.

Yes, I have experienced this. I try to set emotional boundaries and limit how much I absorb. Positivity does not mean tolerating constant drain. Sometimes self protection is the healthiest response.
