I'm in a 'head of' global role (2yrs - first global). It's also very cut-throat, where I'm used to highly governed companies in how they're allowed to treat staff. I've watched them push several people out, with no obvious faults. Since a recent bout of quite serious ill health, it looks like I am not starting to receive the same treatment. When ready to return to work, they refused my return for 3 weeks. They're now adding extra scrutiny and making me very concerned. I'm not sure what to do.

Start finding the right HR words to use in emails to HR. So at least it’s harder for them or you can sue or you can ask for more when they do lay you off. Find the country you’re in and the words that scare HR. US- toxic, discrimination, ageism, etc seem to work.

I have never ever heard of a company that gets to “refuse return“ of the employee. If the doctors released them meaning you, your released to come back to work. The company has no say so. Especially if this was FMLA leave.

Ypu may need to reach put to an employment lawyer. Ad the write notes. They can not refuse due to FMLA laws. If they do , that is a problem.

I cannot leave as I need a fully remote role to manage my health as it's a permanent situation. I never normally have time off unless hospitalised, which is rare. I have worked endless unpaid hours, way past my contracted. Now, because I have asked to reduce the hours to just my contract, it feels like they are looking for any excuse to exit me out of the business. I have never given them any concerns about my work capability or capacity and was promoted this year, but now I feel very concerned about the way they are treating me. There is no union etc and I don't work in an environment where taking it down the legal route is an option, nor would I want to, but if you have any other advice, I would be very grateful. Thanks, in advance.

It’s ALWAYS an option to go down a legal route. That’s a curious perception of limitation.

I would advise to search for a more humane job. There are remote jobs, still. It might take some time to find it, but it’s worth looking.

I never understand why delaying return after ill health is seen as a bad thing. Surely it’s a blessing, to fully recover before being back 100% in the think if competitive work?

I didn’t pick up that she was in an HR role. Not that her title matters, but currently it leans towards training, if it’s accurate.

Gift giving help: every year around this time my husband brings up his Jan bday and basically demands I spend a lot of $ on him. I find this stressful. I don’t do big lavish gifts but each year I feel pressure to or he won’t be happy. When I say this he immediately launches into “haven’t I done this for you, bought that for you”. “If you loved me you would”. His entitlement and manipulation make me feel super resentful and removes the fun of celebrating him. FWIW we earn the same. What to do?
