I wouldn't be the one to bring it up. There is a good chance they won't even remember you. If they do point it out, mention that you are excited to share the experiences you've had over the last 18 months that will make you a perfect fit for the role.
I’d ignore it and not bring it up at all. The chances that you were up against somebody who just edged you out those 18 months ago are a possibility. But definitely focus on whatever ways you’ve recently grown and how it works for the role.
I think the exact opposite. They will remember, maybe not details but enough to know they met and spoken to you before. Then the details will come back.
Instead I’d own it and talk about how much that “no, not now” helped spur growth, how you took it to heart and seriously, and how it go you to where you are today. You make it evidence of your will and grit, and ability to grow from hard truths and feedback. They will not only respect this but it will turn what feels like a negative into a huge positive.
