Get ready for 10 times more meetings . Overall more intense workdays and less fun in the process. Get also ready for a fatter paycheck and more relevance.
Thanks for the original reply, that's some wisdom right there 👍
In Europe the budgets are small, but you make a lot of stuff. Clients have to make decisions instead of burning the budget on different rounds of concepting...
In the US the money doesn’t matter. No decisions are made (because of layers and afraid of getting fired) So you can end up in multiple rounds of concepting. And with multiple I mean spending a year of making fake decks only to sell in the tagline. The only work I actually put in my book over the last 5 years working in NY we’re for (smaller) clients I brought in myself. No money makers, but decisions makers...
That said when you do get work sold (even if it’s a 6-ish idea) you have the budget to make it awesome.
This is really helpful in getting an idea of the day-to-day differences in the work process, thanks! Do you think this is generally the case at all seniority levels? (I'm a mid-level copy with a couple years of experience).
It’s a lifestyle choice. You won’t have a monthlong summer vacation and you’ll be working many more late nights. While it’s true that budgets can be better, that’s not always the case - all clients are lowering costs worldwide.
Thanks for the insight, although I think in Euro countries w low job security (and CDs who cut their teeth in NYC) the hours are more similar to the US (often leaving at 9/10, occasionally staying until 1, 2 or all night plus some weekends) than in countries like France or Germany where employers can't get away with it.
I would miss the 4 weeks of vacation though...
Say bye bye to great healthcare and laws that protect employees 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
What city are you thinking of moving to in the US? i am thinking of moving to Spain...
I'm a US/Irish citizen so I don't need a visa in either market.
