Creatives, times are tough and jobs are scarce... but DON’T put work in your portfolio you DIDN’T concept, create, execute on. Going through the “Avail List” site looking for candidates and have seen a few ACD’s claiming work that isn’t theirs or campaigns where they they produced the social platform pieces yet they have the TV spots as work they produced. - The Ad world is pretty close knit and it’s fairly easy to verify who had a role/part in the work. Honesty goes a long way.

Why are the art directors staying late more so than any other position at ad agencies? Do they also get paid more than most other roles at equal levels?

I currently work full-time at an ad agency making $40k a yr in an entry-level role; however, I am now in the late interview stages w/ a major tech company who is offering $85k but for a contract role w/ no guarantee of hire since I would be covering someone’s temporary leave. I really want to work in music but I am iffy on leaving a full-time job for a contact. Is it ever a good idea to jump ship for a contract job or should I just wait for a full-time role to open up?

is the pay jump from jr. to ad or senior that drastic? Backstory. First generation college student, first in fam to have “an office job with benefits etc and pto.” Recently been seeing a lot of posts about creatives, why certain positions are more likely to get fired etc. what jumped out at me was the $$ people were giving for each position. I assumed jr’s are like 40-50k, ad 50-60k, senior 60-70k. These posts are saying it’s more like 40-50k, 60-70k and 80-90k. Is that real?

Ad agency designer desperately looking for an out but I have a possible new job opportunity. Here is my dilemma: Pros.... more money, no crazy client demands, pitches or decks or even prospective clients that will go nowhere (in-house), better benefits Cons.... this is a big one - it’s healthcare I’ve been at agencies with a range of clients for the past few years. Career suicide taking an in-house healthcare job? Especially if role focuses more on growth & performance over design?

I’m finding that a weird side effect of losing my job in this climate is ad agencies taking advantage of my weakened position. They get in touch, proactively or in response to my reaching out, and they want to hire me as they are in good shape. When I reveal I was laid off, the offer changes to freelance or maybe nothing. My work, awards, the fact that they know me and approached me in the first place should be enough. I don’t want to lie about my situation. Any ideas how to avoid this?

Yo! I’m going into my final year in ad school and my dream has always been to live and work in NYC (I’m from northern Europe). Most of the people i talk to recommend staying in Europe where I can have more responsibility early on and spend less time doing boring junior stuff and then leave for a mid role after a few years. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences with this? Should i just jump into it straight away? Thanks!:)

Not sure what kind of role I should go for but I don’t want to start at the bottom of the art department. I also am terrified of freelancing. Just received my contract for a 12 month contract role and it says I have to give them 2 months notice if I want to break the contract? Previous contract work has always been max 2 to 4 weeks. So 2 months seems ridiculous? Especially given it’s not my dream job, not my level, and paid way less than what I should be getting as an AD. Has anyone ever negotiated on the notice period? Only wanted to take it because I’ve been out of a job for 2 months and thought I’ll keep looking whilst having this.

Functioning with little to no oversight on a day-to-day basis, w/ only strategy checkins with my CD. 100% client facing.
