In CA — I started maternity leave a month before I delivered my baby and was supposed to return to work in February 2025 after using some of my baby bonding time (reserving the last 6 weeks of it for Sept 2025).

I’ve since had to take an additional 3.5 months of disability due to PPD, so with some of my bonding time, I now plan to return June 2025, then go on leave again and use the remainder of my bonding time in September 2025 for the last 6 weeks.

Can my employer let me go for my leaves?

FMLA is protected leave so they can't legally fire you (they'd have to prove your leave is a burden, so it's not impossible but there *is* a chance)

As a mom who has taken 3 maternity leaves in 10 years, I would caution you to think whether those 6 weeks in September are a must.

Believe me, I am incredibly pro mom support. But I'm also very aware that firms use maternity leave and motherhood as their path to take women off partner track and to demote them.

I plan to exit the firm in early 2026.

I’m just trying to buy time for me to work there June-August and October-November.

May I ask who prepared your paperwork for the disability due to PPD? My OB hasn’t seen me since the 6-week checkup so they don’t know my current mental state.

My OBGYN (or his staff) prepared it and continues to follow-up with me after my initial diagnosis at my 6-week PPD appointment.

Thank you. How did you get diagnosed at your 6-weeks appointment?

The 6 weeks in September are protected under CFRA, I thought, which is the remainder of my baby bonding. I am trying to evaluate whether they would fire me under CFRA.

I am not trying to become a partner as my husband is the primary earner in our family; I also may leave the firm in 2026:

I would just like to stick around until early next year and am trying to evaluate if firms generally try to circumvent FMLA and CFRA claiming undue burden.

Covered employers cannot claim undue hardship as a reason for denying or circumventing FML.

I would talk with a California attorney who is familiar with California employment laws. This app really is not a good place to get sound legal advice.

I would speak work and employment attorney in your area. I don't think you've provided enough information in your post for anyone to be able to provide sound advice.

What is baby bonding time? Do you mean parental leave? I don’t know one firm that calls it baby bonding time

Pretty sure NY has something comparable

One of the team member has applied leaves for continuous 3 days this month. Later she applied for a 15 days leave saying a medical emergency. Both the leaves were rejected from her manager saying connect with HR. though she is on leave without PM leave approval and this is not even prior notice to the team.
Now'what and all would be the consequences she might face. Is there any chance of these things are being escalated? Please advise!

Any tips for best places to search for estate planning jobs? LinkedIn, other places? I’ll likely need to leave my current associate EP attorney position at a small firm in CA to move to WA (Seattle area) due to my spouse’s new dream job. Nervous about the transition to new state’s law, plus the job search. Wondering if I should broaden my search to other areas of law. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
