I’m not a fan of vague feedback like this. They need to give you tangible feedback. I would go back to your boss and say “I’ve been thinking a lot about your feedback to ‘loosen up in team meetings’. I want to ensure that I am fully interpreting this feedback so I can put it into action. Would you mind giving me a few examples of what this would look like to you?”
Yes, did this with my boss on some vague personality feedback. It all had to do with comments that had offended him personally or that were clearly being discussed behind my back.
It's hard to gauge since I don't know your company culture. Did you ask your boss for more insight regarding this suggestion?
Is your boss a man (I’d wager 99%)?
Yes
I actually did ask for an example and he wouldn’t quit pin it down. More poking fun at each other in a healthy way is where he was going.
Can you share what industry you’re in? I can’t imagine that being appropriate feedback in my field of work.
You need think about how you act and react and also seek clarity from them. What they said could be a reflection pf their perspective and/ or others.
Mentor
Do you jump right into the meetings? Do you make an effort for some chit chat/ a little bit of banter?
Lots of variables we don’t know or what department you’re in and who you’re working with (example sales teams are much more casual than developers).
