I’m not surprised. There are almost no blacks in positions of authority in big firms and very few minority partners. Big law is systematically racist. The focus on partner books of business rather than merit will always result in institutional racism. Law firms are not meritocratic unless you think revenues are a fair measure of value and competence
Even if minority attorneys are good, they won’t get the same credit as their white peers. https://www.abajournal.com/news/article/hypothetical_legal_memo_demonstrates_unconscious_biases
I’m not surprised. Disappointed but not surprised.
I dont want nor do I need to see a bullshit statement from a firm that has 0 black law partners, has never had a black law partner in their history, and doesnt represent minorities or disenfranchised folk in their work.
If they arent going to walk the walk then theres no need for them to talk.
An insightful and thought provoking movie that illustrates the many cross currents of race and policing in America is “American Son” (Netflix) starring Kerry Washington. At times excruciating and filled with “ah ha” moments this would be a great discussion starter for law firms interested in increasing understanding on our current state of race relations and law.
I’m neither surprised nor disappointed. The issue has become far more complicated in the 10 days since the brutal murder of George Floyd - which all of America condemned (and still condemns).
