I do this constantly during WFH
I do this all the time if it’s just an extended weekend vacation (i.e. Thursday-Sunday). Although I’m still generally responsive to emails.
Even back in 2017, pre quarantine, a then fifth year at my firm took off for 6 months to go to Japan. She responded to all emails from her laptop, and when work popped up (she wasn’t on any active deals during this time period), she would go to the Tokyo office to borrow a desktop setup. Nobody in the Tokyo office really keep in touch with the US folks so nobody noticed.
She then left the firm the next year to lateral so I’m sure this affected her long-term prospects at the firm, but nobody voiced any strong distaste and she didn’t get fired. I think the key is to just stay on top of your work at all times.
Everyone was busy closing other deals and had nothing for her. It wasn’t unusual at my firm to go through spurts of several 200-300 months at a time and then be slow for months. A small handful of mega deals sustained the practice.
I think she went on a one-way ticket and would just fly back whenever as needed.
I did this domestically before covid, but my firm is not big on FaceTime. I would go visit my in-laws or college friends and had my laptop on me at all times and worked out of coffee shops when needed. Worked out fine for me—just one awkward moment when someone asked me to stop by their office and I’m like uhm I’m in a different city for a few weeks, but again that’s my firm, no one really cares
I hope there’s more of this going forward, even for firms that want people to generally be in the office.
Same. And during wfh when I’ve told people I’m going to leave my desk to spend time with family, they’re usually super supportive of that (when we’re not busy)

I did before WFH. Joined my spouse on a business trip to Hawaii. I warned people I would be out of office and in a different time zone, but otherwise available.
Yes, since WFH began I spent nearly a month in Tulum. Whenever I wasn’t working, I was on the beach. I timed it with when I knew I would be slowish.
I do this all the time. I’ve taken 5 trips to Cancun without my firm knowing. But as long as I get my stuff done no one cares.
I do this so often. I just make sure to get as much out of the way as possible before and not take on too much new work before hand. I do regularly check my email and sometimes work at night after dinner or what not. I think it depends on the type of vacation you’re trying to take.
