Is there such a thing as a “career consultant” in our field? This bowl seems to be the closest thing.
Basically someone to discuss issues with that doesn’t have a motivation (like co workers or head hunters), and not close friends or colleagues at other firms either.

There are plenty of consultants in this field, but whether they provide value depends on the specific consultant you work with. My small firm did a consult with someone that does this, which consisted of his team reviewing our internal structures and personnel, and then doing a one day workshop with the partners, and it generated some actionable advice. Then the pandemic hit, so implementation only happened partially.

Issues like comp, lateral moves, firm intel, client development, etc

Thanks. I’m thinking on the individual level rather than the firm level - i.e. should I take this lateral offer, how should I value my book, are there things I could be doing to better client development and service, etc

There are plenty - the issue is finding the right one. We used a consultant that we had known for a long time through networking groups, and that had hired us for some work.

There are professional and executive coaches out there. I bet linked in is a good place to start finding some. To coach through presentations or job negotiations etc. I think it’s a great use of resources to be the best you can be and put forward your best self!

There are a bunch of career coaches that concentrate on lawyers, but they cost a fortune generally

Fellow fishes, an observation. What explains the sudden rise in salaries in new hires.
In 2017/8, $/₹ was 65. Today it's at 80. That's a 20% depreciation over 2017/8 levels. Now, between then and now, salaries may have been corrected 50%. Factor in inflation, and you will see that the hike is just about 20% over a 4 time period. Doesn't seem like big number anymore.

Curious what is involved with lateraling as a partner financially from a nuts/bolts perspective. I don’t mean LPQs or negotiating comp, but the practical things like timing of exit and how that relates to end of year draws, profit-sharing contributions, getting your capital back, and all that. My firm has a lot of aspects of comp and benefits and it seems like a ton of moving parts. Not planning on leaving but I may have to start listening to recruiters if comp doesn’t go well.

We need to grow quickly to keep up with client work. We hired 4 attorneys since Jan 1. 3 newbies and 1 senior associate with nearly as much experience as the partners. Need a staff sergeant to take associate work product of my plate that I can trust… hiring is so stressful

$1.5M client and new “profitability tool” showing %0 profit. Credit split 50/50 btw 20 year attorney/equity partner (JEP) and a much more senior/connected EP (SEP). Both SEP and JEP developed separate workstreams unrelated to the other. SEP‘s was terminated 3 years ago and only accounts for $200K trail off of the $1.5M. SEP’s salary is 3 times JEP’s. Profitability tool “costs” are not transparent, suspect SEP’s high salary is a factor. Anything (other than typical overhead) to ask about?

Joined a well-regarded ID/MedMal Defense firm (50+ attorneys) to start its commercial litigation group 10 years ago. Have had success in growing practice/group and bringing in good clients, but perception is reality, and being at an ID firm is a huge obstacle for getting commercial work. Anyone crack this code, turn an ID firm into “full service”? My best idea is to target 3-4 laterals with decent/modest books, make them great deals to come over, and market it as a rebrand.
