Having tough time deciding between IB & Consulting. My thought process: I have a "better" background for IB (TAS/valuation) and with tech layoffs, this might push more potential would-be tech applications to pursue consulting (there by increased competition)? Additionally, you can do IB intern and full time consulting but not vice versa. I prefer consulting, but IB seems like the "safer" option? And if consulting does get hit hard, I would hopefully have a full time IB offer via internship.

What makes you think the tech guys won’t go to IB?

What makes you think IB layoffs aren’t coming?

Why are you thinking in terms of safer rather than in terms of what you like?

Imo, I think this logic will be moot 2-3 years from now when you’re graduating and the recession is (likely) over... Assume all options are open and pick the one direction you think you’ll enjoy and will be the most successful in. Use your clubs and multiple internships (winter if you have to) to determine that

Your questions are fair:

1) They could but I assume many people want tech b/c of WLB and consulting offers the better WLB out of IB and Consulting (even if by a little). Also at my school there is twice the consulting offers than IB - so my assumption that the school is stronger in consulting and hence tech people would migrate towards that

2) IB seems like it could be safer given deals still would still happen in recession (divestitures) but yes layoffs could happen here as well. Consulting budgets could easily be slashed at clients as it's an easy cost saving measure. LMK if you think I am wrong here.

3) B/c i don't want to come out of graduation without a job given the current macro environment we are in. I have modeling skills already so I'd like to think if I can get the internship, I would be able to convert the full time offer in IB.

Is it the case here?
