I’ve been at my job for about seven months, and I feel like I’m already being iced out. From the start, I didn’t get much guidance on assignments, but my group has a reputation for high associate turnover, so I wasn’t surprised. I tried to take ownership of files as much as possible, but I made mistakes and came across as too needy with questions. Now the partners rarely respond to my emails or requests to meet. Is it possible to turn this around, or should I cut my losses? Does it get better?

Go to HR or ask for a meeting with the managing partner. Explain that you are eager to work hard, provide value, and improve but you would appreciate additional guidance on assignments so that you can provide better work product and help the firm in a more efficient way. You could also ask for CLE opportunities that you can take in your own time to help with your knowledge base

Go on FMLA right before performance reviews. You’ll continue receiving pay for about three months if you’re in New York City. They can’t terminate you immediately upon your return, but they likely will eventually with 3 months to find a new job. meaning you buy yourself roughly six to seven months of pay while doing very little. Staying a year and a half looks far less like a red flag than leaving after only seven months.

P2 - I said specifically NYC. You will still get paid through New York State Paid Family Leave. Its 67 percent of your check

I feel you! Have you tried working with a different group within your firm?

I was told to apply to a hospital job by someone interested in interviewing me. The recruiter reached out. Asked for my availability but then didn’t respond when I gave her my availability. I followed up. We scheduled a phone call (she said she’d call) and then she didn’t call! At this point, I’m thinking they’re totally disorganized. Is this common practice? I’ve never dealt with a recruiter so I don’t know.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
