Something similar happened to me last year, though I was given a much longer runway (9 months). Some advice:
1. Start the convo now about asking for more time. 7th year is a hard time to lateral. Firms are reluctant to hire senior associates for a host of reasons, some reasonable, some less so.
2. Reach out to ALL your contacts now. I found my next gig through a friend who put me in touch with a friend who knew a firm that was looking opportunistically - no job search or any formal process in place. Recruiters are less helpful for seniors - it’s a who you know game.
3. Cast a wide net. Look broadly and don’t box yourself in.
4. Have faith. I was happy *enough* where I was - didn’t love it, but didn’t hate it enough to move. My new firm is leaps and bounds better than my old firm. The people, the autonomy, the work, the opportunity for advancement, etc. As disruptive and stressful as the move was, I have come to realize it was absolutely the best thing that happened to me.
This is more common then you realize and you’ll probably be much happier on the other side! This is a great time to think about what you want this next chapter to be like. Be intentional and good luck!
Where do you live?
Keep your head up! I know it feels daunting to interview since it’s been a while but it’s actually not to hard to find a lateral position in many instances. You will be stronger at interviewing then when you were a student because you actually understand the job and can intelligently speak about your practice. Definitely reach out to your network; they are so helpful in finding new jobs.
You'll find something great! Every lateral move I've made has put me in a better position. You just have to make the most of the time you're still on the website/at the firm and sell your story so you have options!
Do you think any of your clients would be willing to move with you? That could be a game changer. A lot of firms would jump to get you if they think you would bring business with you. Recently saw an associate pull that move when they were asked to leave.
Wow SO proud of that associate. Also, if they could convince the client to move with them, but the partners asked them to leave, that suggests the partner was likely scapegoating the associate in some way. I’d run far away from that partner.
