I go back and forth. Some days I dream about long vacations and finally reading all the books on my list. Other days, I can’t imagine not being involved in the work I love. Financially, I feel solid, but I think the "when" is still TBD.
I retired last year at the age of 60. It took about a year to work through an in-depth financial model that considered pensions, investments, expenses, cost of living adjustments, health, etc…. I think people tend to worry about what they will do without the identity of their profession and work friends. I know I did. It turned out not to be an issue. I still see my work friends and the time spent is more fun. As for the career identity, I still have it, I just don’t live it. Retirement is wonderful!
I don't feel prepared, but that's okay, I don't know if I ever will be. And I don't really think about retirement all that much, I'm not even sure I'd like it. It's still a long ways off, but I feel like I'd want to keep working on some projects no matter what.
Definitely a work in progress! I think about it more these days.. what kind of lifestyle I want, when I can realistically step away. Saving is steady, but there’s always that “Is it enough?” question. I’d love to retire comfortably, not just survive. Do you have a timeline in mind, or just exploring options?
