I’ve had a slow year in hours this year due to IVF and now pregnancy. I’m high risk and will likely have a ton of appointments in the last month. I’m already behind on hours (maybe 100 hours), could try to make them up, or give up now and go on leave early. What would you do?

I was in a similar situation and obviously this differs from firm to firm and practice group but I though I had built enough capital over years of consistent positive feedback and performance to weather one down year, but no - I was put on pip and ultimately asked to leave the same year after returning from mat leave. My hours never recovered upon returning from leave. No regrets in putting my and my child’s health first. Take early leave if you feel you need to for your health or consider reducing your FTE target to anything less than full time hours to ease the pressure of being behind on hours. All the best for a healthy pregnancy.

Yes that’s why I didn’t do it but maybe I should have. I ended up at a better (and busier) firm so it all worked out. You should obviously try to make your hours because from my own experience it’s not a given that the firm will show you any grace if you have a down year. If you don’t think it’s a realistic target and you care about your long-term future at the firm talk to a trusted partner, ask for their advice on how to handle.

I had a similar situation, but I’m still on mat leave so no idea how it would be if I went back (but I’m not going back - accepted a new role).

I took short term disability leave starting at 36 weeks and it was such a relief for me going out on leave then and being able to focus on my and baby’s health for those last few weeks. Making up hours wasn’t a consideration for me at the time, but I’m glad I went on leave when I did, and I hope no one thought worse of me for doing so.

I had a weird situation because my fiscal year ended two months before I went on leave, and I hit my hours for that FY, but then slowed WAY down for my last two months, then took 5.5 months of leave. So I left kind of on a good note, but my hours for this current FY are going to be awful. Coming back from leave my hours are even lower…it’s a major adjustment and honestly even with all of the doctors appointments I wish I knew it was only going to be harder on the other side to hit hours. That being said if you’re physically able, I’d try to bank the good will before you go out because you’re going to need, in my opinion and experience, just as much good will if not more after baby is here. That being said, I know toward the end of my pregnancy I felt absolutely terrible, so it’s easy to say in hindsight. This world is seriously not made for us!

Life gets exponentially harder once the baby is here. I would try to make up the hours now and bank the goodwill, because you’re going to need it after maternity leave when your life is chaos. When are you due? The year is only half over. 100 hours behind isn’t bad at all and trying to make them up shouldn’t be too bad when spread out over the rest of the year, depending on when you’ll be going out on leave.

So that’s like 20 extra hours per month to make up the difference. Doesn’t seem too painful. I’d try to make hours this year and then not worry about next year since you’ll be out half the year on mat leave.
