Sounds like annoying advice but be yourself. The jury can tell you when you’re pretending to be something.
Prepare and practice as much as you can. (For every stage, voir dire, striking arguments, opening statements, your tech, objections and rules of evidence, directed verdict arguments, your direct and cross examinations, and closings)
Sleep and eat well.
I second the first paragraph. Also wearing what makes you feel comfortable be mindful of what kind of venue you’re in however, still do not wear something that makes you feel ugly or physically uncomfortable. If you’re going to wear heels pack a flat in your bag. And bring a few water bottles one for you the first year and your client.
As second chair, best advice is to be as organized as you can be. I was second chair on a big federal jury trial last year, and the shareholder said my organization made me the best trial partner she’s ever had. Here are some quick tips. If first chair needs to know the page/line in a depo for impeachment purposes, you should be able to pull it at a moments notice. Know where all your exhibits are, and know what witnesses you need to admit every exhibit and what key admissions you need for each witness. On the day, be in charge of tracking when exhibits are admitted and when. Have lists of common objections/evidentiary issues. Make as many cheat sheets as you can.
Agree with AA1 wholeheartedly - particularly about knowing what you need to prove to support/rebut the claims and how you are going to do it (exhibits/testimony and if exhibits then what witnesses are you going to use to get the exhibits into evidence). Only thing to add is to know the exceptions to the hearsay rule.
If your jurisdiction has an evidentiary rule book have it at counsel table. Also have any trial book that the judge has at the counsel table.
Jurors watch attorneys so don’t do anything to distract them from watching key evidence and don’t let your emotions show if you get an adverse ruling on some issue.
Pro
Know the rules of evidence. Every single one of them. And review the court part rules re: evidence.
