I was a hockey coach, and I had a player give me an “Honesty” ring for my keychain. When I asked her why she gave me an honesty ring, she said, “Because when you tell us that we suck, you do it in a really good way. It doesn’t feel bad.”
I guess that’s strange but wholesome?
That’s really awesome. Shows that you have a great relationship with the student. Bravo!
During the Christmas season, I wore a red sweater with a large, green tree knitted into the front, which was decorated with tiny gold bells topped with bows. One of the kids who tested post high school on every SAT topic, came into the classroom that morning, tilted his head to the side and said, “That sweater is a curious blend of attractiveness and repulsion.” Considering the source, I simply said, “Thank you.“
Once, when I was a student teacher, an 8th grader said (as if insulting me) "I bet you like Nickleback." When he was a junior or a senior, I saw him in the halls of my high school and said "I still like Nickleback." He smiled and laughed. Good times.
The best I've got is a kid who told me once that he appreciated my sarcasm.
Not quite the same but I love to be the first person to tell a little kid a dad joke! I’ve had kids fall to the floor laughing at just some really normal silly dad jokes and I think it’s hilarious when kids tell me I’m the funniest person they know 🤣 If you teach the younger grades and have a chance to ask why was 6 afraid of 7? And can keep them quite enough to say the punchline - it’s sooo worth it! Definitely do it like right at the end of the day between the 6-7 and the wordplay, omg my class erupted in giggles and hysterics 🤣
Humor is a really important thing, and some kinds of humor are very good ways of assessing education, such as word play.
So good for you! Thanks for keeping things fun and having a good relationship with those kiddos!
Okay I need to know - was this an accurate assessment?! I can't think of anything in particular a student has told me, but your story did remind me of something a very drunk guy said to me at a party back in college. "You look like you only go to clubs with VIP sections" or something like that. I'm still not sure if it was meant as a compliment or if he was saying I seemed stuck up 😂
A student told me I'm pretty for my age! I about died.
I can’t think of anything off the bat but I did have kids in elementary put notes under my door; the notes would say… I need to talk, can you get me, I’m at a 10 lol (kids have to rate their problem, 1-10; 10 is its an emergency) 🤦🏻♀️
Awh haha that's really sweet. The only thing I've had is students tell me I look like Elsa because I have long blonde hair that I often wear in a braid lol. I guess it's a compliment but it gets old after a while.
Wow! Ditto, I am that person, hehe …
I am a tea drinker and murder show watcher as well. I probably look like one too.😆
Yes. Kids have always told me I should be a comedian with the way and frequency that I find humor in things. It’s better than crying I guess.
