Let’s talk about pretty Privilege. What does it mean to you? Does it exist and why? I think it’s supposed to mean if two women with the same skills and abilities are competing for the same job, and they pick the pretty one. But fear not those less visually appealing, who were not picked, very soon the pretty one gets a crusty middle aged frumpy less fortunate looking female boss, and they choke the life from the pretty ones career!

Yes, it’s real. I’ve experienced it.

Pretty privilege definitely exists, many people get handed opportunities just because of the way they look. Take advantage of it if you have it.

You don’t need to be “pretty.” You just need to be professional and well presentable. Presentation and how you carry yourself is very important. The attraction isn’t actually about your physical features. It’s the confidence you have, it’s how well spoken you are. And yes, you should dress and look professional. And even though you may think 2 people have the same skills and abilities, that’s not totally true. No 2 people are exactly the same. One likely has the ability to do the job better than the other, even if it’s a little bit better. They’re not being chosen because they’re “pretty.” They’re being chosen because they’re actually better for the job. And any hiring manager that chooses someone simply because they’re “pretty” I would think is incompetent and I wouldn’t wanna work for that kind of team or company anyway.

Not all companies are like that. There are good ones that exist that are not toxic.

It's not about being pretty, it's about being approachable, professional, and intelligent. Perhaps people with confidence are labeled as pretty because of the way they interact with others and have an ability to attract anyone because they are personable.

You sound a little bitter. Maybe you need a hug.

Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder. When you are looking at it from a professional perspective those biases or stereotypes shouldn't be factors to the success of a persons ability to perform the job, no matter where you work. I will say there are those that take it there and often, there is a lot of jealous people in the workplace. It can be regarding anything they may see in others that bothers them.

What if the pretty privilege analogy is regarding a guy?

Whoa! 😬

Sometimes those “crusty middle age” bosses also take the form of men, and sometimes those take the form as a pretty female, who is intimidated by the “less pretty female“.😁

Interesting twist I like it (proverbially of course) but in my experience the crusty men are of two forms , old crusty stick in their ways but arrogant AF and the place would crumble without their old butt and the ones that let tech pass them up can’t wrap their head around progression but get held up by their team because their likability is high. I’ve never had much luck with middle aged crusty women, to clarify I’m middle aged but not crusty LoL

I think anyone who denies pretty privilege is a thing is just attempting to be contrary and/or knows they have it and don't want to admit it. There are literally studies upon studies that show we as humans or biased towards what we socially consider beautiful.

Even if it isn't rooted in attraction, you see it in people regularly in social dynamics. Pretty people who experience people being more thoughtful, more accommodating because of their bias. It might not be on purpose but you definitely see it happen.

Yep yep and yes

That is a loaded question, and opens a pandoras box of scenarios that; re-ignite past workers rights grievances, calls for stereotyping co-workers, creates a sacrificial lamb to offer for loss of productivity, questions sufferage.
((Ouch))
Each situation is unique.
As a general rule, I do my best to offer a comment that is sharp enough to cause pause, not pointy enough to cause harm, and confusing enough to loose interest in the destructive thinking. The goal is to neutralize threats, expanding cognitive tools, promote harmony, and level the scales if they are out of bounds.

I’m a newly retired school social worker. We have a big dept (now). We have 2 men in the dept- one is retiring this yr, the second is a pretty boy. That’s how he’s described to me behind the scenes. He’s young and tall about my own kids age. Teachers love him and he gets the easiest assignments, but has been in the dept the shortest amount of time and was green when he was hired.

This is my experience of the ‘pretty person’ lol
